What is the difference between a diesel and gasoline injector?
Both injectors inject the fuel into the combustion chamber of the cylinder. The difference is in the ignition. In a petrol engine the petrol is first injected into the cylinder through the injector, after which it mixes with the air inside the cylinder. It is then compressed and ignited with an electric spark from a spark plug. In a diesel engine, the diesel is injected into the cylinder under high pressure and then it is mixed with air. This mixture is compressed to such high pressure that the temperature rises and a spontaneous ignition follows.
How do problems with the injectors start?
Even though there is only fuel coming through the injectors, the injector’s spray pattern can become inefficient because of deposits. The fuel passes through a filter, but tiny particles can always pass through it. This can lead to clogging of the injectors.
